The Shoreham Village Association (TSVA) statement of purpose begins “to maintain and improve the quality of life of its residents through educational and cultural programs...” Our Events program provides educational and cultural presentations in the Village Hall during the winter season, when the Hall is not in high demand. Village guidelines allow TSVA to hold six such events on the upper level each year from October through April.
In seven years (2014 - 2020), we have presented 40 TSVA Events for residents (see all past events here). Two-thirds of them were lectures on arts, sciences, history, or topics of local interest. The rest were concerts, puppet shows, or staged readings. About 40% of all events were presented by Village residents. Often held on a Saturday evening in the Village Hall, a typical event runs a little under two hours, with refreshments, conversation, a one-hour presentation, and time for questions.
One of the best events was the first one, a talk given in 2014 by the late Peter Spier of Shoreham Village on how to write a book for children. Another interesting talk (2018) was also about the work of a creative resident, Rob Lieber, who writes screenplays for feature films. Two events were given special emphasis: Suffragists in Shoreham (2017) and Shoreham Veterans (2019). Show and Tell (2015) was fun, demonstrating the hobbies of several residents. The four staged readings of plays (2015 - 2019) have all been popular.
On average, 49 people attend an event in person and others may see a video of it the next day: With the speaker’s permission, a video is recorded and posted here on the TSVA website.
